U.S. District Court, Denver, CO June 27, 2019. George and Melissa (and local counsel Jordan Lipp) successfully defended their client, obtaining a full defense verdict in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. Plaintiff truck driver sustained injuries when he was struck by cargo that fell off of his step-deck trailer at the unloading site in Minneapolis.  Soule & Stull’s client Immedia had purchased the cargo and plaintiff transported the cargo from the Denver area to Minneapolis.  Plaintiff claimed that Immedia failed to prepare the cargo adequately for shipment and was negligent in supervising the unloading process in Minneapolis. During the two week trial, the parties presented thirty-nine witnesses, including eighteen expert witnesses. Plaintiff requested the jury award over $15 million in economic losses in addition to pain and suffering damages and punitive damages. After four hours of deliberation, the jury returned a defense verdict, finding against plaintiff’s claims that Immedia was negligent and vicariously liable for alleged negligence of its contractor.

Oct. 11, 2019. Today law.com published an article exploring how small, experienced law firms can be an excellent way to access greater diversity when seeking outside counsel. Soule & Stull is 100% minority and woman owned and both George and Melissa discussed diversity with the article’s author. Diversity is “especially important in litigation and trial practice, to have a diverse trial team that looks like the jury you’re going to be trying the case in front of” said Melissa. October 6, 2019. The Star Tribune featured Soule & Stull today in the business profile of the Sunday paper. As Twin Cities law offices continue to merge with large, national firms, S&S continues to find success as a small firm serving the litigation needs of clients around the country. August 22, 2019.  George Soule spoke on a panel today at a Minnesota CLE Seminar about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision involving political gerrymandering.  George joined Minneapolis lawyers Kay Nord Hunt and Daniel Rogan in a lively discussion of Rucho v. Common Cause and efforts to restrict partisan redistricting.  

August 15, 2019    Soule & Stull celebrated summer in George and Lisa’s backyard on Thursday evening. The S&S team, complete with spouses and children, gathered for good food and great company. The barbeque brisket, sidewalk chalk, blueberry peach cobbler, and games of tag were just a few of the many highlights of the evening.

August 14, 2019. George participated in a panel discussion on “Effective Arbitration Advocacy at the Hearing: Arbitrators Share What Works and What Doesn’t” at a Minnesota CLE seminar, Best Practices for Advocates in Arbitrations, in Minneapolis. George focused on presentation and cross-examination of experts at an arbitration hearing.  In addition to his work as a trial lawyer, George serves as an arbitrator and represents clients in arbitrations.

July 2019. Super Lawyers released its annual list of top attorneys, and named Melissa a Rising Star and George a Super Lawyer in the publication’s 2019 rankings.  George has received Super Lawyer designation every year since 1998 and Melissa has received Rising Star status every year since 2013.

July 18, 2019 – Soule & Stull again sponsored the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association golf tournament, held at The Meadows at Mystic Lake.  The tournament benefits American Indian students attending Minnesota law schools.  George is a past president of MAIBA. Soule & Stull has supported the golf tournament for six years and Melissa and George have played in the tournament together nearly every year for the last fourteen years.   George and Melissa were joined by our good friend Anton van der Merwe (who gets credit for the photograph).  Melissa and Anton played good golf!

May 2019.  George greeted graduating students at three college and university commencements this month.  A Trustee on the Minnesota State College and Universities Board, George spoke to students at Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College on May 10, and at Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College on May 16.  At Bemidji State, George spent time with retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, recognized as a Distinguished Minnesotan by the university.  Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College is a unique partnership between tribe and state.  The commencement there was very moving, with native drums, a jingle dancer, and the Star Spangled Banner sung in the Ojibwe language! May 7, 2019.  Spring was late this year, but was in full bloom at the firm’s 5th Annual Spring Deck Party.  About 100 friends, family, community leaders, lawyers and judges got together for a good time.
