July 21, 2016. George participated in a panel discussion on Effective Arbitration Advocacy at the Hearing: Arbitrators Share What Works and What Doesn’t at a Minnesota CLE seminar, Best Practices for Advocates in Arbitrations, in Minneapolis. George focused on presentation and cross-examination of experts at an arbitration hearing.
July 2016. Super Lawyers magazine named George Soule a Super Lawyer and Melissa Stull a Rising Star in its 2016 rankings. George has received Super Lawyer designation each year since 1998 and this is Melissa’s fourth Rising Star honor.
July 2016. The Minnesota State Bar Association Civil Litigation Governing Council elected Melissa to serve on its executive board. She will serve as the Section’s Secretary from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 and is in line to Chair the Section in 2019. In the last term, Melissa was instrumental in organizing the Civil Litigation Section’s Annual Meeting, at which Jeffrey Toobin spoke. The Section hosted five CLE programs in 2015-2016 and created a program to offer free memberships to members of affinity bar groups. The Section has 1,375 members. Soule & Stull is the home of three Civil Litigation Chairs, past and future, as George chaired the Council in 1994-1995 and Kevin in 2011-2012.
June 13, 2016 – Soule & Stull sponsored a hole and a foursome in the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation Shoot for the Stars Golf Tournament on Monday. George, Melissa, Tim Bettenga, and Susan Holden enjoyed a gorgeous day on the Burl Oaks golf course. George is a past Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directions. The Foundation is committed to serving the community, preventing crime, and supporting the Sheriff’s office, especially the volunteer Special Deputies.
June 14, 2016. George Soule, along with co-presenter Susan Holden, discussed Judicial Campaign Conduct and Activities at a seminar sponsored by the Minnesota Board of Judicial Standards. Several 2016 state court candidates, and their supporters, attended the seminar. George and Susan discussed several aspects of judicial campaigns, including statutes, rules and codes that govern candidates’ conduct.

June 7, 2016. George Soule was the featured speaker at this month’s Senior Republicans of Minnesota meeting in Richfield. George spoke about judicial appointments and elections, including federal judge appointments, the confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts, the Minnesota Commission on Judicial Selection and state court appointments, and state court elections. There was a lively discussion of judge and court-related topics, including what appointments under President Clinton or Trump might look like. From 1999 – 2002, George served as Chair of the Minnesota Commission on Judicial Selection under Governor Jesse Ventura, and has co-chaired several campaigns for Minnesota Supreme Court justices.

On May 16, 2016, the St. Louis Park City Council appointed Kevin Curry to the St. Louis Park Police Advisory Commission, which acts to enhance awareness of Police Department capabilities and services; provide an opportunity for citizen involvement and input in police services; and encourage positive interactions between the Police Department and the community.
April 2016. Soule & Stull sponsored a table at the MSBA Civil Litigation Annual Meeting at Windows on Minnesota in Minneapolis. Nearly 200 local attorneys, including George, Melissa, Kevin and S&S clients and friends, attended the event, at which Fourth Judicial District Chief Judge Cahill received the Advocate Award. The keynote speaker was Jeffrey Toobin, legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker magazine and author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court (2007) and The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court (2012). Mr. Toobin spoke on the effect of the 2016 election on The United States Supreme Court, providing a unique look at the inner workings of The Supreme Court and its influence, as well as his thoughts on how the upcoming elections will shape the court and, in turn, the nation. The event was sponsored by the Civil Litigation Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. Melissa is a member of the Governing Council of the MSBA Civil Litigation Section and was instrumental in organizing the event and Mr. Toobin’s talk.
April 11, 2016. The International Society of Barristers inducted George Soule as a Fellow of the Society at its April 2016 Convention near San Diego. With regular membership of less than 700 lawyers adjudged by their peers and judges to be “outstanding in the field of advocacy,” the Society is dedicated to preserving trial by jury, the adversary system and an independent judiciary.
George is also a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and an Associate in the American Board of Trial Advocates. He served as Minnesota Chapter President of ABOTA in 2014.
April 2016. Melissa Stull and George Soule published an article, “A Look at Product Liability: The Product Liability Landscape for Furniture Retailers and Manufacturers” in the 2016 March/April edition of Furniture World, a magazine serving the furniture industry. This article, aimed at furniture retailers and manufacturers, explains product liability law is it relates to the furniture industry and the special challenges manufacturers and retailers face in light of the focus on furniture safety and liability.
